Cumulus Data, a subsidiary of Talen Energy, announced the creation of a nuclear-powered data center to provide electric hosting and bitcoin (BTC) mining services in the United States.

The data center is powered by a direct connection to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, which produces about 2.5 gigawatts (GW), World Nuclear News reported.

Cumulus Data’s facility will be the most competitive in the U.S.

Cumulus Data reported that its 1,200-acre campus will offer greater energy and economic benefits because of its direct link to the Susquehanna power plant.

The first 48 MW, the 300,000-square-foot data center is ready to offer cloud computing and bitcoin mining services.

Alex Hernandez, CEO of Cumulus Data, stated that the campus is ready to meet the demand for carbon-free energy, welcoming all companies that want to do business with them.

“Our flagship Cumulus Susquehanna Susquehanna data center campus is positioned to welcome its first tenant and begin commercial operations this year,” Hernandez maintained.

Hernandez added, “We look forward to advancing our mission to solve the energy ‘trilemma,’ which we define as the growing consumer demand for carbon-free, reliable, and low-cost electricity from data center customers.”

Nautilus Cryptomines is the first carbon-free BTC mining powerhouse

Nautilus Cryptomines will be the first cryptocurrency company to take advantage of Cumulus Data’s facilities to run its bitcoin mining operations.

The first 50 MW phase of the mining plant is expected to be operational before the end of the first quarter of 2023.

Talen Energy, announced the creation of Nautilus Cryptomine in August 2021, with the goal of creating a U.S.-based mining infrastructure that was capable of operating on 100% carbon-free energy.

“As global adoption of digital assets and demand for energy increases, we think zero-carbon currencies with verifiable attributes and U.S. provenance will be differentiators for those looking to invest in digital currency production,” Hernandez maintained.
