The Museum of the City of New York will enter the metaverse with NFTs and cryptocurrencies.

The Museum of the City of New York, the history and art museum in Manhattan, New York, founded by Henry Collins Brown, in 1923, has filed a trademark application, signaling its plans to enter the metaverse and the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
According to the trademark application, filed with the USPTO on Aug. 10, the museum plans to offer:
- Virtual goods;
- NFTs;
- Cryptocollectibles;
- Cryptocollectibles and application tokens used and transferred in software as a service (SaaS);
- Cryptocollectibles and application tokens used and transferred in platform as a service (PAAS).

Not the first Museum on the Web3
Ahead of Valentine’s Day, the Belvedere Museum in Vienna launched an NFT, The Kiss, which is a popular work by Gustav Klimt.
In September 2021, the British Museum also entered the NFT world by collaborating with LaCollection, aiming to launch a collection of digital postcards by Hokusai.
In January, KAWS, the American contemporary artist, brought AR to the Serpentine Gallery.
Last May, Seattle’s first NFT museum went live and unveiled digital art.
In addition, Dubai’s Museum of the Future announced a partnership with Binance’s NFT marketplace for the launch of its first NFT collection, “The Most Beautiful NFTs of the Metaverse.”
In mid-July, an NFT gallery opened in midtown Manhattan, allowing creators to show their digital art from anywhere in the world.
Likewise, Luckmon announced a collaboration with the Morrowbogi and Chamsori Gramophone Museum and the Edison Museum of Science to establish a unique NFT initiative that includes physical ownership of a landmark innovation by American icon Thomas Edison.
