A trademark application was filed by Viacom International Inc. for the popular 80’s series, the Ninja Turtles, to participate in a Web 3.0 project and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT).

The information was made known by trademark and patent attorney Mike Kondoudis through his Twitter account.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) was the entity in charge of receiving last September 6 the documents of Viacom International Inc. to operate in the North American country.

The USPTO specializes in areas such as virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), video games and cryptocurrencies.

The popularity of cryptocurrencies

The owner of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise, realizing the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies, the metaverse and NFTs, is looking for a way to interact with the audience following this animated series from the 80s and 90s.

For that reason, it applied to Viacom International Inc. to manage before the USPTO the registration of two trademarks related to collectible NFTs and a Web 3.0-backed software.

The first trademark will allow fans of the popular Ninja Turtles, named Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello у Raphael, to download NFT у collectible virtual goods.

With regard to the second brand, software will be created, the purpose of which is to transfer NFT у tokens on a special platform.

It is worth noting that from January 1 to August 31, 2022, the number of applications to register trademarks related to cryptocurrencies exceeded 3,600 in the United States.

This figure is higher than the 3,516 applications for the year 2021 registered in the North American nation.

Ninja Turtles

The Ninja Turtles were created in 1984 as a black and white cartoon by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael under the orders of their master Splinter were dedicated to fighting crime in New York City.

Its 198 episodes were broadcast on television for nine years (1984-1993) on the American network CBS.

From the late 1980s until the premiere of “Rise of the Ninja Turtles” on Nickelodeon (2012-2017), this series has had various formats on television.

Metaverse and NFT-based trademark applications are increasing at a massive rate. More and more companies are coming forward to not be left behind and acquire market share to deliver innovative experiences.

Recently, Hooters, Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King, Panera Bread, McDonald’s, Wingstop, Panda Express, Tyson Foods, Carl’s Jr. and others have already filed trademark applications to express their intentions to enter the metaverse with virtual food and beverages and offer NFTs.

Likewise, Champion, Under Armour, Herman Miller, Tommy Hilfiger, Louis Vuitton and Carhartt have already filed similar trademark applications.
