Barcelona and Web3
This is not the first step the two teams have taken towards Web3. Recently, FC Barcelona sold an NFT to commemorate Johan Cruyff’s “impossible goal” against Atletico Madrid in 1973 for $693,000.
Earlier this month, Socios made a €100 million investment in Barcelona, giving the NFT company a 25% stake in the soccer club’s audiovisual unit, Barca Studios.
“Barca Studios includes metaverses, NFTs and Barça tokens. It’s the sale of a stake… it’s in principle forever, we could get it back if something happens,” said club president Joan Laporta at a press conference held to present the club’s latest signing, Jules Kounde.
In March, the Catalan club announced it was launching its own cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFT) to alleviate its debt situation.
Real Madrid and the Web3
Meanwhile, Real Madrid entered the metaverse in May to build a digital recreation of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, offering fans the ability to virtually explore the stadium and view a 3D recreation of the trophy cabinet.
The Real Madrid Virtual World platform will also use digital avatars and multimedia translation tools to allow fans from different territories to interact with each other, and is available on iOS and Android as a free download.
