Hearst Holdings has filed a trademark application for the name “Popeye,” indicating its plan to move it into the metaverse and into the realm of NFTs.

Hearst Holdings, which controls more than 360 companies, has filed a trademark application for the “POPEYE” name and image, indicating its plan to move it into the metaverse and the realm of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

According to the application, which was filed with the USPTO on July 22, the company plans to offer

  • Virtual goods, namely footwear, clothing, accessories, watches, toys and others for use in virtual and online worlds;
  • Downloadable multimedia files containing illustrations, text, audio and video related to cardboard characters authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Companies are increasingly filing trademark applications related to the metaverse and NFTs in an attempt to bring awareness to classic cartoons forever and innovate them, with the goal of appealing to new generations with this revolutionary new technology.
