Milking the Artist, 2022, was a controversial and thought-provoking performance art piece by OONA x Lori Baldwin, involving Ethereum transactions and milking a breast.
Yes, you read that right. This innovative piece combined performance art with the latest blockchain and web3.0 technology to make art history at Art Basel Miami Beach.
Milking the Artist was a transgressive and unconventional performance. It was so controversial that it was removed from the official program of the SCOPE Miami art fair for being “too much.”
So the artists took matters into their own hands, turning it into a guerrilla art performance with live auction while OONA milked the chest.
At SCOPE, the winning bid for the glass of milk was 50ETH.
From the artists: “There are few conceptual artists who combine overall performance artwork with blockchain technology. This piece is revolutionary as it transforms performance art into something permanent via reinforcing it via the production of an NFT. Instead of making generative or algorithm-primarily based artwork, we are the use of the frame and a bodily byproduct, demonstrating that NFTs can be used for any medium. NFTs can be utilized by all artists as a manner to mention ‘this befell, we did this, you cannot take it far from us, we’re there inside the public record’.”
Milking the Artist was conceived by OONA, an anonymous conceptual artist from the Holy See, and Lori Baldwin, a performance artist from Berlin.
They asked themselves: are breasts hypersexual or utilitarian? Why is this question still relevant? Which bodies control and which are censored? Who milks whom in the art world? This piece offers unique insight into the intersections between consent and consumerism, artist and art world.
From the artists: “At maximum art festivals, bare breasts exist handiest in photographs, framed as useless items. Here the breasts are bold because they may be attached to a residing, consenting frame. The insidious complexities of the art world decide which artists to exploit and what sort of their milk is really worth. In Milking the artist we play with context and its courting to cost. We improve the bottom rate of feminist performances. Nudity is the gateway drug to the deeper layers of this paintings. Sure, the performance responds to the general obsession with the objectification of girls, however it simplest stops there if you want it to.”
OONA doesn’t actually exist, but she takes herself very seriously, so that you need to too. OONA is an nameless conceptual artist whose multimedia practice increases questions about electricity, delight and identification.
OONA was born at NFTNYC on November 1, 2021. Since then, OONA has received a grant for “The Art of Gender and Sexuality” from Playboy and Sevens Foundation; exhibited artwork at Avalanche Summit Barcelona 2022, Artaverse Hong Kong 2022, WAGMIAMI Art Basel 2021 and more.
