OpenSea announced the implementation of new security measures to prevent fake NFTs within its platform.

These measures will be just the beginning for the increase of mechanisms to help prove the authenticity of NFTs within the platform.

What are OpenSea’s updates?

OpenSea found the eligibility process for verification and credentialing to be slow and difficult to access, so four changes to the system have been implemented:

  • A new invitation-based system that expands the number of creators eligible for verification.
  • An updated collection authorization process that allows verified accounts to request a credential for a collection with high buying and selling interest.
  • A new streamlined in-product experience to notify eligible creators directly on their profile pages and guide them through the account verification and collection identification process.
  • A dedicated customer support team that will respond to account verification and collection authorization requests.

Reducing Copymints in OpenSea

OpenSea developers have also decided to implement a new system to reduce the amount of Copymints (NFT copies) within the platform.

Among the measures taken by OpenSea are:

  • Image recognition technology: the new Copymint prevention system will leverage computer vision technology to scan all NFTs in OpenSea.
  • Manual review: the platform will hire dedicated specialists to review the deletion recommendations made by the image recognition.

With this system, OpenSea’s long-term goals are:

  • Work together with the community to remove all existing Copymints in OpenSea.
  • Help prevent the appearance of new Copymints groups.
