Our collaboration with STB for Merlion’s virtual vacation is a case in point. Singapore Tourism Board is delighted to partner with Millennium Hotels and Resorts on this metaverse pilot project to reimagine our tourism offering, and we welcome everyone to join us and explore Singapore virtually,” said Chang Chee Pey, Deputy General Manager, Marketing Group, Singapore Tourism Board.

About the Merlion

The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, first created in 1964 as the corporate logo of the then Singapore Tourism Promotion Board (STPB).

The first statue of the Merlion was erected in 1972 by local sculptor Lim Nang Seng and was officiated on September 15, 1972 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at the mouth of the Singapore River.

Since its installation, the Merlion has been Singapore’s national emblem for tourism, a cherished icon synonymous with our humble beginnings and our journey as a nation.

As we welcome the world to Singapore, the Merlion reminds us of our rich cultural heritage and resilience. The Merlion’s 50th anniversary not only celebrates its longevity, but also how we are reimagining our city as a vibrant destination and a home that Singaporeans can be proud of.
