American actor, comedian and filmmaker Jordan Peele has unveiled a metaverse experience for his upcoming film, “Nope.” The “Nope” VR experience has been co-produced by Meta, Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Universal Pictures.

Visitors to the multi-world VR experience will begin their journey with “Monkeypaw Productions: All Aboard,” a train cabin that teleports visitors to “Nope World.” This segment of the VR experience contains hidden Easter eggs from “Nope,” as well as Peele’s previous releases, “Get Out” and “Us.”

After being transported to “Nope World,” visitors will arrive at a digital replica of the film’s Hollywood Ranch. There, visitors will be able to interact with each other, play mini-games and experience other interactive elements, such as playing records, riding a motorcycle and being sucked into the sky by a storm cloud.

The “Nope” world will only allow a maximum of 11 visitors at a time, and more seats will be added as needed. Two other VR experiences, “Get Out World” and “Us World,” will launch later this summer.

The “Nope” VR experience was created to promote Peele’s upcoming film of the same name, scheduled for release on July 22. The film stars Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya, who play the caretakers of a California horse ranch who discover that a UFO is flying over the property.

“It was important to create a unique audience experience for ‘Nope’ that celebrated the innovative filmmaking and spirit of Jordan Peele,” said Alex Sanger, executive vice president, global digital marketing, Universal Pictures. “Partnering with Meta and Monkeypaw allowed us to create a unique virtual reality experience in Horizon Worlds.”

The VR experience contains no spoilers, but features set pieces and elements easily recognizable to those who have seen the trailer. The virtual world is a joint effort of Monkeypaw’s vice president of culture and impact, Keisha Senter, director of culture and impact, Sophia Williams, and four creators from the Horizon Worlds community – Ashley Briley, Matt Torres, Sammy Nu and Kevin Dixon.

The creators were not given any information about the film, other than what appears in the released trailers, so they could build the VR experience without spoilers.

“Through this VR experience we’ve developed with Universal and Monkeypaw, people can fully immerse themselves in Jordan Peele’s cinematic artistry,” said Katie Jones, Meta’s North American studio partnerships lead. “This is a unique opportunity for viewers to explore this world with other fans and for our partners to connect with their audiences in innovative ways.”

Visitors can access the virtual worlds on the Quest 2 VR headset. Starting next month, Quest 2 users will not need a Facebook account to use Horizon Worlds, but will need to create a separate Meta account.
