The expansion of the metaverse requires users to own gadgets like VR headsets and AR glasses. These gadgets have become more popular lately, but they are still not as widespread. Companies like Google, Meta, Sony PlayStation, and Microsoft, have their headsets already. However, such gadgets can still be expensive.
The highly detailed digital universe of the metaverse depends on high-speed Internet to function. While 5G might be nearly perfect, not everyone has access to the technology yet. Currently, 5G reaches about 30% of the world’s population, with only 10% of that outside of China.
Conquering the Metaverse – Challenges Ahead
The metaverse as a new version of the internet isn’t free from dangers and concerns, just as the current one isn’t. There are issues dealing with privacy, identity hacking, and even health issues.
The new VR headsets are implementing eye-tracking technology, collecting data about where you’re looking and for how long. Marketers couldn’t be more excited about it, as it can provide invaluable information for them. However, it also shows how advertisers and other players in the industry can get more invasive. It’s also more difficult to track what children do online, and new forms of interaction expose them to even more dangers.
Also, we have a new hangover to deal with, thanks to VR headsets. The “VR hangover” is a documented phenomenon that arises after long hours of using the headset. Some users also reported what is called “post-VR sadness” when they come to reality after such immersive experiences in the metaverse universe.
Recent numbers indicate that nearly 400,000 million people are already accessing the metaverse worldwide. Those numbers pale compared to the number of active internet users which stands at 4.66 billion. So, there’s so much room for expansion and improvement.
