Bored Ape Yacht Club is coming in a big way! Coinbase has just announced that it will take Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs to Hollywood and feature them in a film trilogy. The three-part film series will celebrate the unique BAYC community and the NFT space as a whole.

What we know so far

The film series, called “The Degen Trilogy,” will premiere at NFT NYC June 20-23. The name is related to the crypto term “degen,” which refers to people who buy NFT or invest in crypto without prior research.

BAYC members can contribute to the film series by submitting their sims for consideration through the Degen Trilogy website. If you are not an ape holder, you can still access the Degen Trilogy website for updates, drops, easter eggs, etc. In addition, viewers will be able to vote for their favorite storyline and the future of the trilogy.

Coinbase’s director of culture and entertainment marketing, William Swann, commented on this new venture:

“At Coinbase, we are dedicated to creating and supporting content projects that speak directly to our community and upholding the culture of innovation on Web3.”

He continued:

“As our goal is to bring the next billion people into the cryptoeconomy, we strongly believe that this interactive film series will act as a catalyst to serve that mission and help the public understand the collaborative nature of Web3. We have been inspired by the Bored Ape Yacht Club community and [are] excited to invite them to co-create this film with us.”

The Bored Ape Yacht Club in pop culture

Without a doubt, Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the most popular NFT collections in the world. In April 2021, each piece cost about $250. Today, the cheapest NFT costs 113 ETH or $344,484.

In addition to being a status symbol, a BAYC NFT serves as a membership pass for the BAYC community. These include stars such as Tom Brady, Madonna, Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon and Snoop Dogg, among others.

It’s safe to say that Bored Ape Yacht Club has transcended the cryptocurrency community and is now part of pop culture. Jimmy Fallon and Paris Hilton talked about their monkeys during an interview on the Tonight Show that went viral. Rolling Stone brought out a special edition with a boring jumpsuit on its cover. In addition, brands like PrettyLittleThings, Adidas and Prada have partnered with BAYC.

Yuga Labs is pulling out all the stops to keep expanding the BAYC universe. In addition to launching ApeCoin and the Otherside metaverse, the company is also working on off-chain initiatives. These include a pop-up burger joint in California, BAYC figurines with Superplastic and a mobile game with Animoca Games.

Bored Ape Yacht Club isn’t the only collection getting the big-screen treatment. In February, Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine announced a storytelling partnership with the NFT World of Women (WoW) project. As part of the partnership, Witherspoon’s company will create feature films centered on WoW, as well as scripted and unscripted television series.
