Reddit launches collectible avatars
Reddit is launching “collectible avatars” on its new NFT avatar marketplace, allowing users to purchase blockchain-based profile pictures for use on and off the platform.
The social news aggregation site is launching avatars of 90 different designs created by artists in the r/comics, r/procreate and r/adobeillustrator communities.
For this first collection, “tens of thousands” of limited edition “collectible avatars” will be available for purchase in this early access phase.
Catch 'em while you can! Collectible Avatars are limited-edition creations designed by some of Reddit's most passionate artists. 💥

Currently only a small group of Reddit users can purchase the avatars by joining the subreddit r/collectibleavatars by invitation, and in which it offers details on how to set up a portfolio, “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) by the artists who designed the avatar artwork and behind-the-scenes posts about the profile images.
The site says the avatars will be available for public purchase on its avatar build page “in the coming weeks.” Users will be able to pay for the avatars with credit/debit cards.
Instead of describing blockchain-based avatars as NFTs, Reddit uses the term “collectible avatars,” but they function just like NFTs.
For example, Reddit has partnered with Polygon to coin these avatars on the blockchain. Users can store and manage the avatars in Reddit’s own Reddit Vault blockchain wallet, which also stores community points earned from participation in various subreddits.
Purchasers of the avatars will have licensing rights to use the artwork on and off Reddit.
Avatar owners can also remix the artwork with merchandise available on the avatar build page. Owners of the “collectible avatar” will see a “glow effect” next to their comments in the subreddits.
Avatars are currently sold at fixed prices of $9.99, $24.99, $49.99, $74.99 or $99.99.
Unlike regular NFT marketplaces, avatar prices will not fluctuate depending on market conditions.
Artists will receive royalties with a 50/50 split with Reddit from secondary sales of these avatars on NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea or Rarible.
This is not Reddit’s first foray into NFTs, as in January the platform began testing a new feature that would allow users to set any NFT as their avatar and verify ownership.
Reddit says it wants to explore more features with NFTs and blockchain technology.
“Going forward, we see blockchain as a way to bring more empowerment and independence to communities on Reddit. Reddit has always been a model for what decentralization online could look like; our communities are self-built and self-managed, and as part of our mission to better empower our communities, we are exploring tools to help them become even more self-sufficient and self-governing,” the company wrote in a statement.
